Description

The large black and white print depicts a villager, with villagers viewing the eruption of Parícutin that's happening in the background, with the Church of San Juan Parangaricutiro in sight. Entitled "El Volcan Parícutin Mich. Prop. Reg." and signed "H. Brehme, Mexico". The second sepia print depicts the same eruption of Parícutin, from the perspective within a street in Uruapan. Entitled "Fumarola del Paricutín" and description reads "Tomada el 10 de Abril del 1942, El Boreegul(?), Uruapan Mich". The third black and white postcard depicts the Church of San Juan Parangaricutiro, presumably time after the eruption of Parícutin. Text reads "112. Parangaricutiro Mich, Navarro Por."

The Maker

Hugo Brehme (1882-1954) was a German-born black and white photographer based in Mexico. He started a photographic studio in Mexico City called "Fotografía Artística Hugo Brehme" around 1912 and was successful for 40 years. His subjects in photos were mainly of traditional rural Mexico, scenic landscapes, railways, modern monuments and archeological sites. His photos were often placed in tourist guides and magazines, and a large number of postcards of Hugo's photos were produced. He was also an early mentor for Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo. Many of Hugo's photos are found at Texas State University in San Marcos, Southern Methodist University and the Fototeca Nacional, which is the Mexican government repository for photographs.
