Text beneath the image reads, "El dia 4 de Abril de 1876 lesucedio a D. Refugio Ramos la desgracia de que caminando de el camino de Chietla hubiera sido sorprendido por dos infantes malhedrores y queriendose e...(?) de ellos los acometio lebantacdofe(?) las Iridas a su caballo y sacando un paz no que Uebara(?) entonces uno de los dos lo dupero(?) intiro(?) con una pistola cuando ...recieron otro puandidos que salieron de la barranca ... llegas el num. 0 de trenta que lo odearon ... poderre ubrar lo mas ... aron y el comandaste dispacio que lo colga ... en un cabol(?) pues este echo fue en el paraje del espira ... D. Refugio en esta afliccion invoco de todo corazon al Sa...delsa una... que se banera en el rancho de Fezonteopa(?) y se escape por un milagro del sor en agradecim. 0 lo de...ca el ...." which loosely translates to, "On April 4, 1876, Don Refugio Ramos met with misfortune while traveling along the Chietla road; he was surprised by two armed footpads. Attempting to defend himself, he spurred his horse and drew his pistol, but one of the assailants shot him. Then, other bandits emerged from the ravine—a group of about thirty—and surrounded him. He was unable to escape; they seized him, and the commander ordered him hanged from a tree. This incident took place at the spot known as El Espira. In his distress, Don Refugio wholeheartedly invoked the Savior; he managed to escape—miraculously—and in gratitude, he dedicated this offering."
