The Maker
Saulo Moreno Hernandez (1933-2018) was a Mexican artisan who was mostly known for his folk art based papier-mâché and wire figures called alambroides. He began his work at a young age, influenced by traditional Mexican figures called Judas and Aztec ancestors. He attended the National Academy of San Carlos in 1950, where he learned painting and sculpture techniques. His works have been recognized by many countries and he has earned numerous awards, like the National Prize for Popular Art in 1975.
Art and Technique
The Alambroides Technique is a process involving creating figures out of wire, covering the wire foundation with papier-mâché, priming the figures in white once it dries and painting over it. This was a technique created by Saulo Moreno Hernandez.
