Manuel Felguérez Barra

Abstract Artist

Manuel Felguérez Barra (1928-2020) was a Mexican abstract artist and was a part of the Generación de la Ruptura that broke alongside the muralist movement of Diego Rivera in the mid 20th century. Felguérez was born in Zacatecas, but had to relocate to Mexico City due to political instability causing his family to lose their land. In 1947, Felguérez got the opportunity to travel to Europe and decided to devote himself to art after being impressed with the art there. He did most of his studies in France, since he was unhappy with the education at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico, and specialized in abstract art. His exhibitions were limited to galleries and his works were made up of scrap metals, stone and sand. Felguérez worked as an artist until later in his life, although never depending on his art sales to live. He took on different occupations out of necessity. When he worked as a teacher, his most important focus was to teach his students to be original. He died from COVID-19 during the pandemic in 2020.
