Hector Rascon (1958-2017) is a folk artist, known for his wood carvings, from Northern New Mexico. He learned the art of carving from the famous artist, Ben Ortega, who is also his father-in-law. He started to carve his own pieces and would spend 14 hours a day, 5 days a week in his workshop. His carvings of St. Francis and angels are his more notable pieces, as well as his carvings of animals like lions, horses, leopards, coyotes, etc. His animal pieces are carved from cottonwood and aspen using a chainsaw. Each piece has its own personality and character, and ranges from 6 inches to 5 feet. Rascon passed away in 201 due to an illness.
