Cándido Melchor Méndez is one of the four brothers of María Jiménez Ojeda. He and his brothers would carve pieces, then she would paint original designs for them. Many of the pieces he would produce are based on sleek animals, such as a toucan or dog, and incorporating exaggerated features like giving the toucan an abnormal beak. In their family, María signs the pieces she paints, while Cándido and his brothers sign pieces that they or their wives paint.
