Ángel Ortiz Gabriel is a Mexican ceramicist from Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico. He started learning how to work with clay from the age of 11 and was taught by his grandparents, Cruz Gabriel and Maria Felix Bautista. Ángel also learned under Jorge Wilmot. Over the years, Ángel has won awards on a state and national level. Ángel's son, Ángel Ortiz Arana, also works with his dad in their studio-house-workshop. Their works usually depict artwork of farmers, seasonal celebrations and fiestas, women kneading tortillas and observations of life and death. The process of their pieces consist of picking quality grade clay and mixing them in proper proportions to ensure that its strength and flexibility can withstand heat and humidity. Then it is formed by hand and placed in shade to dry until the piece gets hard. Any irregularities are corrected with a smooth stone. Whitewash is applied so that earth tone paints can be used to decorate the piece. Finally, the pieces are fired at 600°C for two and half hours. The two work on their own pieces and never the other.
