Art and Technique

Amate comes from the word "amatl" from the Nahuatl language, which means "paper." It is a type of paper made from the pulp of the fig and mulberry trees. These paintings were usually hand painted by the indigenous Nahua indians of Guerrero. Amate paintings usually depict scenes of everyday life of villagers, such as harvests, fiestas, weddings, religious customs and wildlife.
