Description

Wood carved polychrome painted bas relief entitled, "El Niño y Sus Juegetes (The Boy and His Toys)," depicting political overtones and references to World War II symbols. A boy and his mother are seen in the front with toys scattered on the ground. A wire string is attached on the back for wall hanging. Hand carved signed "R D La Selva" on bottom left corner. The title, "El Niño y Sus Juegetes" is penciled on back.

The Maker

Roberto de la Selva (1895-1957) was a Nicaraguan native artist who moved to Mexico City in 1921 as a protest against U.S. military occupation. He would go on to be apart of a movement known as Mexican Modernism alongside artists like Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco. Roberto was mostly known for his bas relief woodworking. He studied art at Mexico City's Academy of San Carlos and apprenticed as a wood craftsman in Apizaco. He is also the brother of poet Salomon de la Selva.
