Attempting to defend himself, he spurred his horse and drew his pistol, but one of the assailants shot him. Then, other bandits emerged from the ravine—a group of about thirty—and surrounded him. He was unable to escape; they seized him, and the commander ordered him hanged from a tree. This incident took place at the spot known as El Espira.
